Maple Glazed Canada Day Donuts! Vegan, Gluten Free, and Baked, not Fried.

How crazy was that storm last night? My Instagram feed is full of pictures of the dark clouds rolling in. Here in the city we weren’t affected by tornadoes, but it sure got windy.

I had just started mixing up the batter for these donuts when the skies turned black, and once the storm hit, I was nervous that the power was going to go out. Fortunately it didn’t, so I was able to finish up my batch of Red & White Canada Day Donuts. I gave them a maple glaze, since these are Canada Day donuts, after all.

These donuts are moderately healthier than their fried counterparts, so that’s something you can feel good about. They are about 200 calories each, which is still a big treat, but much better than the 500 calorie donuts at Timmies. I ended up eating a couple of these for dinner. Not that I recommend that though. But yum! These donuts are denser than your traditional donut, but still light and airy just like a donut should be without all the hassle of frying.

Maple Glazed Canada Day Donuts

(Yield: 12 donuts)


  • 2 cups gluten free flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 flax eggs (to make a flax egg, combine 1 tbs ground flax seed with 3 tbs warm water)
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tsp white vinegar
  • 2 tbs maple syrup
  • 2 tbs coconut oil
  • red food colour (optional)
  • 1/4 cup shredded coconut (optional)

For glaze:

  • 1 cup sifted powdered sugar
  • 2 tbs maple syrup
  • 2 tbs unsweetened almond milk

Directions: In a small bowl make two flax eggs and set aside to thicken. In a large bowl combine dry ingredients. Add wet ingredients and flax eggs. Mix until combined. If desired, separate in two batches and add food colour to half the batter. Fill greased donut pan (just under full), and bake at 425F for 6-8 minutes. In a bowl, mix glaze ingredients until well combined. For a thicker icing add more powdered sugar. For a thinner glaze add more almond milk. If desired, separate in two and add food colour to half. Allow donuts to cool fully if you’re using a thicker icing, or dip while warm for a glaze.
