Happy Canada Day!
I hope you had a chance to check out my other Canada Day recipes, but if the holiday snuck up on you and you’re looking for a last-minute food idea, then go with one of these super easy, festive solutions. When all else fails, go with red, white and bacon! And of course there’s nothing more Canadian than maple syrup, so drizzle that on whatever else you have on hand, et voila!
For a really cute and tasty appetizer, try Bocconcini and Tomato skewers. They’ll take you all of 2 minutes to put together and couldn’t be easier. Ok, so there’s nothing Canadian about Bocconcini, and the basil takes it over-the-top Italian. But don’t leave it out, the basil definitely makes it. Hey, it’s red and white enough, and that’s what you get when you leave things until the last minute.
Pasta is pretty much the quickest thing you can get on the table. Cook half the pasta with red food colouring in the water for a fun and easy meal. Serve warm or cold for a really cute pasta salad.
Popcorn is one of my favourite snacks. And this sweet and salty popcorn incorporates all the things you need for a last-minute Canada Day snack: red, white, bacon and maple syrup. While you’re frying up the bacon, get your corn popped. Good popcorn needs the right popcorn kernel. Melt butter, divide in two and food colouring to half. In a large ziploc bag or bowl, mix half the popcorn with the red butter. Add salt, cooked bacon and drizzle with maple syrup. Sweet, salty and sticky.
