In her Beauty Detox books, Kimberly Snyder promotes proper food combining to optimize digestion. Food combining theories have been around for ages, and some people feel food combining is the key to health, while others argue that there’s no scientific basis for it.
I don’t know if the benefits people report are because of the food combining itself, or just because paying attention to food combining just generally leads to better food choice. I’ll let you know how I feel about it after my 30 days of properly combined meals.
Food Combining Rules:
1. eat fruit alone on an empty stomach
2. eat proteins with non-starchy vegetables
3. eat starchy vegetables and grains with non-starchy vegetables
When I first read the Beauty Detox books, I printed out a food combining chart and had it stuck up on my fridge. I followed the rules for a while, but eventually that chart disappeared, and my proper food combining went with it. While I think it’s one of the trickier principles to follow (lemons are acidic but alkalizing in the body, what?), I think it’s probably the one that has the biggest effect on my food choices.
When I try to follow the food combining guidelines, it forces me to make healthier and lighter choices. Instead of enjoying my meat sauce over spaghetti, I’ll eat it with spaghetti squash. Instead of eating my fish with rice, I’ll choose steamed vegetables. Basically the idea is that you can eat pretty much anything you want, but just not all together.
Now that I’ve gotten back into the Beauty Detox swing of things with Kimberly Snyder’s Glowing Lean 30 Day Meal Plan, I’m revisiting all those food combining rules. Kim’s meal plan makes it easy because her foods are all properly paired, but I’ve gotten stumped a few times over the last few days, so I asked Google, and have compiled the answers here.
Food Combining Questions:
I like to eat fruit as an afternoon snack. How long should I wait after lunch to eat fruit?
It’s best to eat fruit on an empty stomach (breakfast), but fruit can be eaten 3-4 hours after a meal. Eeek! That’s a long time. I think I’ll have to go with some chopped fresh veggies for my afternoon snack now instead. Or eat a banana.
What about the other way around. How long should I wait after fruit to eat a meal?
Fruit digests really quickly, so you only have to wait about 45 minutes before your next meal.
If I need to eat fruit alone, does that mean I can’t enjoy one of my favourite snacks: apple slices with almond butter?
Sad news. Apple slices and almond butter are a no-no. But almond butter on celery sticks are cool.
I’ve heard of the health benefits of nutritional yeast and add it to everything. Is that ok?
I like making a trail mix with nuts, seeds and dried fruit. Fruit needs to be eaten alone, but what about dried fruits?
